SODEMASA presents the advances of the European project WOODE3 aimed at fostering the energetic use of biomass

Next Friday, 22^nd of June takes place the Workshop titled “2^nd meeting of companies of the biomass sector” of the WOODE3 project that also includes a visit of the nurseries that are in charge of the Provicial Services of Zaragoza and Huesca.

SODEMASA takes part as a partner in the European Project “WOODE3: Business development through forest energy exploitation”. Its main objective is to provide the mechanisms of support to help stakeholders and partners decision making, increasing their capacity to foster the sustainable and rational use of wood resources as energy source.

This project is being carried out since 2010 and, after two years running, its first results are being shown now.

In this second technical workshop, the guides for the tools already developed are going to be presented. These are the guide for the Data Base and the guide for the Calculation of the CO2 Emissions during forestry works. In addition, the progress in the tool for the Evaluation of the Impact of Biomass Projects is going to be presented, although this tool is still under development.

The workshop includes a visit to the plantations of poplar log crops in short rotation for energy purposes, in the framework of the Project PSE ON Crops (www.oncultivos.com) jointly developed by SODEMASA and CIRCE, in collaboration with the Directorate General for Forest Management of the Government of Aragon. These plantations are situated in the nurseries of the Provincial Services of Agriculture, Livestock and Environment of Zaragoza and Huesca.

It is expected the attendance of companies of forestry services, companies of the recycling and waste management sector, installers and traders of biomass boilers, technologists, consultants, companies which produce biofuels from forestry origins and administration representatives.

After these visits, participants will return to the Sella hotel complex, where they will receive the user manuals of the two main tools provided by the project: the "database" and "calculator carbon footprint."

Also, there will be presented the progress made in developing the tool "Assessing impacts of biomass projects" that aims to facilitate the assessment of these projects based on social, environmental, economic and governance. This instrument allows comparing each project with a project type or other projects.

Finally, an opinion poll is carried out to assess, from different points of view, the situation and development of biomass sector in Aragon. The meeting will bring together around 30 experts, mainly from forest service companies and recycling industry, boiler installers, technicians, producers of biofuels and government representatives.

Findings from this meeting will be shared with the European partners of the project WOOD E3 and disseminated at European level.
